“Dry Drowning”

This is the most terrifying thing I’ve ever heard. I had no idea something like this could even happen — did you? Our hearts go out to Johnny’s family.

The general state of the universe would improve tenfold if everyone followed this list before sending an email. I must admit, #20 made me snicker.

Traffic Lights

Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 09:06am

After sitting at a local traffic light last night, the geekboy and I got into a discussion about timers and do lights really know if your car is there or is it just dumb luck sometimes that you’ll roll up to the line and it will change and blah blah blah? I maintained that everyone talks about these fancy detectors in the road, but nobody really knows exactly how they work or if they even exist. And if there are detectors, why have I sometimes spent what felt like HOURS sitting a light in the middle of nowhere? The geekboy’s argument was basically, “Whatever, freak, it’s tiresome to argue with your know-it-all ass, look it up and you’ll see.” So I did. Turns out sensors do exist, but not every single traffic light has them. So there you go.

Social Factors in Quitting Smoking

Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 08:38am

A study came out today that notes people tend to quit smoking in groups, and that quitting tends to have a ripple effect across other groups. This isn’t news to me, but it’s interesting in terms of developing new therapies to help people quit. I know that if Maggie and Jeremy hadn’t quit smoking, I probably wouldn’t have been able to, either. And then my parents quit right after I did, and the fact that we all quit at the same time really helped.

I believe this study is by the same people that told us last year that people tend to gain and lose weight in groups as well. It seems pretty obvious, doesn’t it?

A list of everyday food that can get you high, although it sounds a lot more fun than it actually is.

Running On Empty

Thursday, May 08, 2008 at 07:52am

How far can you go after the gas light in your car comes on? I will drive around on E for days and it makes the geekboy crazy. At least now I know how far I can go. I always figured it was about fifty miles and, for the Toyota Matrix at least, that’s about right. [via]

Blog Blues

Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at 08:48am

I’ve noticed that the blog has had a big drop in activity lately. I don’t know if people are simply busy, if I’m losing readership, if I haven’t been blogging about anything worth discussing, or what. It’s probably a combination of a lot of things. I’m feeling really burned out on blogging lately and it appears I’m mostly just shouting into the void anyway. Maybe I should take a break? I don’t know.

I’m just…uninspired.

Vintage HBO

Remember back when we first got HBO in the 80s? And before every movie they played a little intro? Here’s a video of the making of that intro. Really supercool to see how they put it together, in the pre-CGI age. Read the rest of this entry »

Sync Google Calendar to Outlook

Thursday, March 06, 2008 at 09:41am

One of the reasons I refuse to give up on the Outlook email client is because it’s the best tool (for me) for business and scheduling. However, I also love the google calendar, as I can access it anywhere. Finally, Google has released a tool that will sync Outlook and Google Calendars together. Hooray! I already installed and synced and it took less than five minutes.

Cloth Diapers on eBay

Tuesday, March 04, 2008 at 12:43pm

Shannon and I were talking about cloth diapers (she is in the process of getting rid of Sophie’s old ones) and she told me that eBay has continually removed her listings for said cloth diapers — apparently, CLEAN used cloth diapers violate eBay’s policy on the sale of used underwear. What? Even though this affects me in no way, I just can’t believe how stupid this policy is. Here’s a petition you can sign.

It’s February 29!

Jeez, Just Buy a Scraper

Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 01:54pm

Speaking of weather, can I make a public service announcement? Is it snowy where you are? Cold and icy, too? Do me a favor and go look at the hood and roof of your car. Is it covered in snow or ice? If it isn’t, thank you for not sucking. If it is, please take a moment and punch yourself in the face.

The other day as I drove down Route 287, my car was hit with a piece of ice that flew off the top of an 18-wheeler from the opposite side of the highway. This slab of ice flew at me, as big as my own car, and hit the roof with a crash. I nearly drove off the road in fright. My roof avoided major damage, but if my car had been just a few feet forward, my windshield would have been smashed in. I know the example of an 18-wheeler is extreme, but I’ve been hit by giant sheets of ice and snow from regular cars, too. Seriously, people, how hard is it to take an extra minute?

Are You Registered to Vote?

Tuesday, January 08, 2008 at 08:24am

Remember, everyone, in order to vote on February 5th, you need to be registered by January 14th. If you’ve moved to a different state or county recently, you probably need to re-register. If you haven’t voted in a very long time, you should contact your Board of Elections and ensure you’re still registered. And, you can register online right here.
