Howard Stern is playing Rufus Wainwright’s “Across the Universe” right now. So weird. Actually, I guess Fred is playing it. But Howard and Robin are going ga-ga over it. Yay, Rufus!

Michael Stipe Speaks Out

Friday, March 21, 2008 at 02:21pm

The other day, a bunch of gossip rags reported that Michael Stipe had “come out.” I don’t know what rocks these people have been living under, as he’s been out for years. Anyway, this is pretty amusing.

The drummer from ABBA has died in a freak accident. Like, a REALLY freaky accident. Yikes. I didn’t even know ABBA had a regular drummer. So sad.

Vampire Weekend

Monday, March 10, 2008 at 10:39am

I caught Vampire Weekend on SNL this weekend, and was completely charmed. They are now in rotation on the iPod. The lead singer totally reminds me of the kid who played Mannie in the movie Go.

More about the band here, and a video after the jump. Enjoy. Read the rest of this entry »

Frickin’ Ticketmaster

Monday, February 25, 2008 at 10:08am

Not like this is news or anything, but Ticketmaster and corporate-owned arenas can suck it. What the hell is a “convenience charge,” anyway? I should be charging THEM for convenience. I don’t find it “convenient” being forced to step over vomiting teens in order to use the bathroom. Nor do I find it “convenient” to purchase lawn tickets but not be allowed to choose where on the lawn I’d like to sit. And does anyone really find it “convenient” to pay $8 a cup for domestic beer?

Having said that, I’m going to see The Police + Elvis Costello this summer.

Across The Universe

Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at 08:46am

Last night we watched Across The Universe by Julie Taymor. We liked it. I was afraid it was just going to be randomly thrown together Beatles songs with trippy visuals and a clunky storyline. Glad I was wrong. Obviously, the songs drive the story, but the story worked. The guy that played the lead, Jude, was head and shoulders above the rest of the cast, though. The cameos were great fun and included Bono, Salma Hayek, Joe Cocker and Eddie Izzard. I woke up this morning with songs in my head. Read the rest of this entry »

Pop Culture Weekend

Monday, February 11, 2008 at 08:33am

I spent much of the weekend immersed in pop culture. After thumbing through my pile of magazines (People, Entertainment Weekly, Radar, Interview and, uh, Cook’s Illustrated), I decided to watch HBO’s Bernard and Doris. Being the Doris Duke freak that I am, I was totally jazzed to see this movie. I knew it would be full of drama and half-truths — and it was — but it was also totally camp and Susan Sarandon was fabulous. She played Ms. Duke as a sexually voracious boozehound with a penchant for smoking weed, and I loved it. Ralph Fiennes was terribly understated and played the role of Bernard Lafferty with probably more respect than the actual man deserved.

The Mika Show

Monday, February 04, 2008 at 08:35am

Janet, Lisa, Bluebunny and I all went to see Mika at Terminal 5 in Hell’s Kitchen this weekend. BTW, I really liked Terminal 5. Great venue. We also brought Lisa’s 17-year-old niece, and she didn’t seem too put out at having to spend the evening with four old ladies. Anyway, you guys. The show? Was awesome. Just so much fun. The crowd was incredibly diverse; people of all kinds. We saw parents with their kids, cute gay boys holding hands, teenage sluts, hippies…Janet even spotted a gigantic bald man in the audience, passionately singing along to “Big Girl, You Are Beautiful.” Too funny.

We arrived at the show around 8:00pm or so and found ourselves a spot on the upper level, which gave a bird’s eye view of the stage. Our view was blocked at some points by other people or equipment, but I didn’t care. Read the rest of this entry »
