The Great Planet Robbery

Friday, May 09, 2008 at 08:36am

Our friend Craig wrote another book. I’m shocked that between caring for his baby daughter, quitting smoking, freaking out about American politics, and pretty much harassing the geekboy and Susie’s husband through email on an hourly basis that he even had the time. But he did, and Publisher’s Weekly gave it a good review, and you should buy it. Details here.

He Is Iron Man

tony stark

This afternoon we caught a matinee of Iron Man. Oh my gah, it was so good. Jon Favreau did a stellar job, and Robert Downey Jr. is the motherflipping HOTNESS, you have no idea. And Fishsticks didn’t even annoy me. Go see it. Try to spot Peter “Ralphie” Billingsley in a cameo. And stick around for the credits.

Discuss in the comments - obviously SPOILERS abound.

Cool Blog Alert!

Thursday, May 01, 2008 at 08:26am

Fellow Jersey girl, rock DJ and all-around cool chick Jill has started her own blog that should be of interest to many of my readers — Has Boobs, Reads Comics. I’ve added her to my blogroll; don’t forget to check her out! (Disclaimer: This isn’t the Jill that posts here sometimes; this is another Jill. Although we still love and adore Jill v1.0)

Nickelodeon Nights Free Film Series

Thursday, May 01, 2008 at 08:21am

I want to give some props to our friend Sara, who has started a film series in her (and the geekboy’s) hometown of Lambertville, NJ. You can see a free movie every Saturday night, and in the summer it moves to an outdoor venue. May’s schedule looks particularly fun — check it out here. If you’re local, sign up for the mailing list.

And donations are always welcome.

Wes Anderson

Monday, April 21, 2008 at 11:56am

On Saturday I had a conversation with Charlie and the geekboy about my love for Wes Anderson, spurred on by re-watching The Darjeeling Limited last week, and repeated viewings of The Royal Tenenbaums on cable over the past month. About his visuals and his music and how his films are just so saturated with beauty. How sometimes a single scene can squeeze your heart until you almost can’t breathe (Richie Tenenbaum’s shaving scene, the funeral in Darjeeling). Searching around on YouTube, I found these. Jamie Lee Curtis, You Are My Idol

Yes, yes, YES. This mindset is the one to which I aspire and is also the reason I am not dreading my 40th birthday. (yet)

Spring Awakening

Monday, April 07, 2008 at 08:53am

Yesterday I went to see Spring Awakening with Lisa, Greater Czarina, Janet and Bluebunny. Loved it. I knew about the subject matter going in, but I didn’t expect it to be so explicit. But it worked and I’m not a prude and the show was fantastic. I got an extra little thrill at the end when the cast did their curtain call and Duncan Sheik took the stage along with them — I am a big fan! I knew he wrote the music but didn’t expect him to be hanging around the theater on a Sunday afternoon. So that was fun. More about the day after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Mascara Follow-Up

Monday, March 10, 2008 at 12:22pm

Thanks to everyone who chimed in on the mascara debate the other day. I decided to try out the Lorac mascara, as I was totally intrigued by Greater Czarina’s description of “tubules.” I bought it in brown, although I might choose black next time as it wasn’t as dramatic as I’d hoped. However, it didn’t smudge or budge all evening, and I slept in it Saturday night. Sunday morning - no smudge! I finally took it off last night and, as promised, it slid off each lash. Crazy! I haven’t given it the contact lens test yet, but I plan to during the week.

Vampire Weekend

Monday, March 10, 2008 at 10:39am

I caught Vampire Weekend on SNL this weekend, and was completely charmed. They are now in rotation on the iPod. The lead singer totally reminds me of the kid who played Mannie in the movie Go.

More about the band here, and a video after the jump. Enjoy. Read the rest of this entry »
