Happy Birthday to my cousin Jenny across the pond!

So yeah, I threw a surprise party for the geekboy over the weekend. I’ve been planning it since early in the summer, and was so glad that Maggie and Jeremy were able to come. Their visit also made him totally clueless about the party; he figured that they were his birthday surprise. I have been so stressed out for the past week or so, hoping that he didn’t find out, hoping that everybody showed up, hoping that the party would go well. Mission accomplished! The freaknieces called the other night to wish Geekboy a happy birthday. They are too cute. When Freakniece #2 got on the phone, she asked me repeatedly if I was going to come over. Actually, what she said was, “YOU COME TO MY HOUSE YES?” She is killing me. I finally said, “Why don’t you come visit our house?” and after a pause, she plaintively bleated, “BUT I DON’T KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE!” She asked the geekboy if he was going to have cake (”YOU HAVE CAKE?”) and he told her that Aunt Freakgirl had baked a carrot cake. She then handed the phone off to my brother-in-law, informing him, “UNCLE GEEKBOY HAVE CAKE AND ALSO A CARROT!”

Today is the geekboy’s 40th birthday! Can you believe it? He still looks like a kid. My goal today is to get 40 comments/40 nice things written about the geekboy. I’ll start!

I’m back!

Hello from Florida, my friends! It is balls hot here and I got a sunburn. Yesterday I walked from the car to the house and I burst into flame. D’oh. The girls were surprised to see me - Freakniece #1 walked right past me at school because she “thought [I] was a stranger,” and Freakniece #2 just stared at me, squealed, and then grabbed one of her daycare friends and yelled proudly, “LOOK, DAT IS MY AUNT DEBBIE!”

Yesterday was Freakniece #1’s birthday party. Much fun. Including her and her sister, there were six kids running around and all I remember is about three hours of screaming. My friend Jimy turned to me at one point after peeling one of his daughters off his leg and remarked, “Excellent birth control, isn’t it?” I raised my very full glass of pinot grigio to him. The kids had a great time, though, and there’s just something about a little girl running around in an Alice in Wonderland dress that’s too adorable for words.

I made Freakniece a cupcake cake for her party. She requested chocolate cakes and asked me to “draw Hello Kitty in the middle, okay, and up here you write ‘Happy Birthday’ and under Hello Kitty you write my name and please do a lot of pink.” Mission accomplished, and I’ll post a photo when I get home.

Also, my nieces can sing all the words to “Fergalicious.”

I KNOW.

Tomorrow morning I leave for a brief trip to Florida. The geekboy is staying home, so take good care of him, okay? I’ll be gone from Friday to Tuesday. My sister and BIL know I’m coming, but the freaknieces do not. Tomorrow my sister and I are going to pick up Freakniece #1 from school, and I am already imagining the smile on her face. Especially since she called me last night and told me she really wished I was on television so she could see me. Then we will pick up Freakniece #2, and my sister and I decided that she will be so excited and surprised that she’ll probably run around in circles and then fall on the floor. When I spoke to her on the phone last night she was shouting something about was I wearing makeup and I was going to need makeup, and then my sister informed me that the child was wearing her underwear outside of her pants.

I met my cousin and her two boys for lunch today. While she took the younger one to the bathroom, I sat with the older one. He was coloring and chanting something over and over, and I said, “You sound like a broken record.” He looked at me and asked, “What’s a record?”

Thanks to everyone for their kind words yesterday. The geekboy and I appreciate it. The funeral was small and quiet, and the service was, in a word, ridiculous. The minister stuttered and babbled his way through a nonsensical speech where he mispronounced the geekniece and geeknephew’s names, kept saying, “Am I right?” and then finally just read from the prayer card that was lying on the table in front of him. Rest in peace, Ginny.

Wow, the past few days have gone by in a blur. I’m wiped out. Our holiday was lovely. Read the rest of this entry »
