So, how was your Father’s Day weekend? Ours was a whirlwind of socializing — put it this way, don’t bother trying to buy any wine this week because I drank it all. As usual, our weekend revolved around food. Just the way I like it. Read the rest of this entry »

Tonight is FreakMom’s retirement dinner. My mom has worked in our local school district since I was in grade school. She works mostly with kids with special needs, and is beloved by every student and teacher that have ever worked with her. It’s not uncommon for my mom to run into now-adult former students in town, and they are always delighted to see her. I’m so glad she can finally take some time for herself, as she’s spent most of her life taking care of other people. I don’t know how the school will get along without her, but I also know there are some little blonde girls down in Florida who are anxiously awaiting Grammy and Pop-Pop for an extended vacation.

The geekboy and I went to a wedding this weekend. A cousin of his got married; very nice people, although it must be said that we’re not very close. In fact, other than this wedding, my guess is that we won’t see them again until somebody dies. The ceremony and reception were held in the same place, and we heard that the original ceremony officiant suffered a stroke earlier in the week and would be replaced by someone else. I’m in Florida! With wireless! And sun! I wasn’t here for ten minutes before my sister slapped a blood-filled mosquito off my shoulder.

This weekend I made two more felted bowls.

They are made with yarn from Dyed in the Wool Handmade. Both bowls came out a bit flimsy, which is my own fault — I should have double-stranded the yarn but I wanted to see how they would stand up with a single strand. And now I know. The small one would be excellent for something like cotton balls or paper clips, etc.
Saturday we had dinner with my parents and brother, which was nice. My dad made these delicious scallops that involved Grand Marnier…seriously yum. We also played two rounds of Trivial Pursuit - the first time was FreakDad/Geekboy against FreakMom/Freakgirl. The second round was Geekboy/Freakgirl against FreakDad/FreakMom. Here’s how that turned out:

Yesterday the geekboy and I went over to the Sugarloaf Craft Festival, which was more fun that I thought it might be. We picked up some rustic pottery soup bowls, a great selection of soup, a couple gifts, and met some really interesting artists.
And you?

Today is my mom’s birthday (HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Mom!) and Wednesday is my brother’s birthday (HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Ken!). Saturday night we all went out to dinner to celebrate, and came back to my parents’ house for cake, wine and Scrabble. It’s become a tradition that I make my mom her birthday cake. This year I took a recipe from The Whimsical Bakehouse, and here it is: Read the rest of this entry »

Happy 2008, ya’ll! We’re now officially into Bush’s last year in office, and it feels so good. Let’s hope that next year we’re not sitting here crying about President Huckabee. I’ll be halfway to Canada before you can blink, people. Anyway, as usual, I started off the new year with a hangover. Read the rest of this entry »

UPDATE: Welcome to the world, Baby Alice! Sorry you had to be born into this goofy family of ours.

So yeah, I threw a surprise party for the geekboy over the weekend. I’ve been planning it since early in the summer, and was so glad that Maggie and Jeremy were able to come. Their visit also made him totally clueless about the party; he figured that they were his birthday surprise. I have been so stressed out for the past week or so, hoping that he didn’t find out, hoping that everybody showed up, hoping that the party would go well. Mission accomplished! The freaknieces called the other night to wish Geekboy a happy birthday. They are too cute. When Freakniece #2 got on the phone, she asked me repeatedly if I was going to come over. Actually, what she said was, “YOU COME TO MY HOUSE YES?” She is killing me. I finally said, “Why don’t you come visit our house?” and after a pause, she plaintively bleated, “BUT I DON’T KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE!” She asked the geekboy if he was going to have cake (”YOU HAVE CAKE?”) and he told her that Aunt Freakgirl had baked a carrot cake. She then handed the phone off to my brother-in-law, informing him, “UNCLE GEEKBOY HAVE CAKE AND ALSO A CARROT!”
