Boot Camp – Day Fifteen
We’re now three-quarters done with Boot Camp. One more week to go! As I do every Friday, I weighed myself this morning. I’ve gained more weight. Almost two pounds! I know it’s not supposed to be about weight, it’s supposed to be about measurements, but COME ON. I just feel…frustrated.
Boot Camp – Day Twelve – Antarctica Edition
It was really cold this morning. Cold enough for frost on the car and gloves on the hands. For the first time since I started this venture, I had to opt out of an activity (jogging/sprint). I’ve mentioned before I have asthma. It’s not a constant problem at all, but exercise-, allergy- and cold-induced. As I get stronger, the exercise-induced asthma has minimized a little bit. But the cold was just too much today. After some cardio, my lungs felt shallow and my fingers started tingling. I felt like the pale little kid in gym class, sitting in the bleachers clutching a doctor’s note and an inhaler. Here’s hoping it warms up tomorrow!
Boot Camp – Day Ten
So, boot camp is now half over. Today was fun. We paired off (Beth and I were buddies, of course) and played a game the trainer calls “Minesweeper.” We jogged out to the tennis court, where she had set up a field of plastic discs. Underneath each one was an exercise — cardio or strength. That’s all we did for the hour, ran back and forth doing cardio or weights. The time went super quickly.
I weighed myself the very first day of boot camp and then again last Friday, and noticed I had actually lost a couple of pounds. This morning I weighed myself again. I was hoping to have lost a little this week, but I haven’t. In fact, I’ve gained a quarter of a pound (although really, a good poop will probably take care of that, heh). I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit discouraged. The logical part of my brain is really proud that I’ve done 10 days, though!
Boot Camp – Day Seven
I think it’s safe to assume that Tuesdays are going to be the absolute worst. That was the case last week, and it held true today. In related news, I am getting better at jumping rope. Also, my shins feel shredded. Any advice, fitness experts?
Boot Camp – Day Five
One week down! Three weeks to go! Today we had to see how many pushups we can do in a row. Then we’ll do it again the last week of camp. I have the upper-body strength of an infant. I did 20 pushups, the knee kind, and I could barely lower myself to the ground. But I’m getting stronger every day, I just know it. For all the complaining I’m doing, I’m feeling proud. This sort of thing is completely out of my comfort level, but I’m doing it anyway. That alone is an accomplishment.
Boot Camp – Day One
Beth and I started Boot Camp today. Getting up at 5:00am wasn’t as bad as I’d anticipated. Ask me again in a few days, though. I imagine it will get old fast. Because it’s been raining, our first session was in the community center gym. Usually sessions are outside. The group was a mixture of veterans and newbies, a variety of ages and sizes. Our instructor was very nice (although she kept calling me “Beth,” heh heh) and kept the class moving. As soon as we got there, we warmed up by jogging a few laps around the gym. Then we took to our mats and did some shoulder and arm work with 5lb weights. And lots of lunges. Lots of horrible, awful lunges. The trainer interspersed these with bursts of jump rope (40 revs) and then two laps around the gym. Next we did a cardio circuit, where we moved around the room doing stuff like jumping jacks, side steps, plank pose, things like that. The hour ended with some ab work and some stretching.
Beth is completely in her element in this sort of situation. But I kept up well, I think. The jogging is tough for me but I hung in. I can already tell my knees are going to be sore for a while until they get used to this. The woman I was paired with for the cardio circuit told me that last time she did the camp, she lost 8 pounds. Sweet. Also, when I told her we’re doing the five-day per week rather than the three-day, she looked at me sideways and said, “You’re crazy.” It was nice, though, to feel that we’d accomplished something by 7:00am. I was home, showered, dressed and at my desk by 8:00am. ONLY 19 MORE SESSIONS!
