Bromosexuals

Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 09:21am

Last night, the geekboy and I were talking about Reaper and how the relationship between Sam and Sock is way more interesting than the relationship between Sam and Andi. Which led us to the realization that some of the most entertaining relationships on television have been between two straight men. Jay & Silent Bob call the phenomenon “heterosexual lifemates,” but I prefer the word “bromos.”

My rules are that it’s not really about homoerotic tension (hello, Lex and Clark). It’s more like total and utter co-dependence and over-involvement in each other’s lives. The list after the jump.

Famous Bromos:

1.  J.D. & Turk (Scrubs)
2.  Chandler & Joey (Friends)
3.  Bert & Ernie (Sesame Street)
4.  Sam & Sock (Reaper)
5.  Carl & Lenny (The Simpsons)
6.  Seth & Ryan (The O.C.)
7.  Hawkeye & B.J. (M.A.S.H.)
8.  Lenny & Squiggy (Laverne & Shirley)
9.  The Skipper & Gilligan (Gilligan’s Island) *
10. Jerry & George (Seinfeld) *
11. Jemaine & Brett (Flight of the Conchords) *
12. Beavis & Butthead (Beavis & Butthead) *
13. Will & Chuckie (Good Will Hunting) *
14. Kip & Henry (Bosom Buddies) *
15. Larry & Balki (Perfect Strangers) *

Carl and Lenny fer sure! I’m trying to think if any pairings from Lost would work.. but there seems to be too much distrust and paranoia amongst that group.

  2. GeekBoy on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 9:43 am

Oh, Lost just made me think of one …

    Skipper & Gilligan?

  3. freakgirl on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 9:48 am

    NICE.

JD and Turk is my favorite pairing.

Drs Wilson and House? A little one-sided maybe, but House did make Wilson’s wives jealous.

I like to think that Adam and Jamie from Mythbusters are like this, but who knows.

Michael, Michael and David from Stella.

    Jemaine and Bret.

Oh, and maybe Larry and Jeff from Curb? I mean, to the extent that Larry David can have an interpersonal relationship with ANYONE.

Matt and Danny from the very short lived but excellent Studio 60.

  7. Soosan on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 9:56 am

    Jerry and George from Seinfeld?

  8. freakgirl on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 9:58 am

Jemaine and Bret for sure, Jerry and George for sure.

I’ve never seen House or Curb, so unsure on those. Matt and Danny from Studio 60, also unsure. I’ve noticed that most of these pairs have been together forever and don’t seem to have much of a life if the other one isn’t in it. Were Matt and Danny like that?

Well my favorite is Mark & Roger from Rent, but I’m a nerd… also Ponyboy & Johnny.

I agree though, I love male best friendships.

    Don’t forget Matt & Ben!

I was thinking Matt and Ben too. My boyfriend has friends like this… but not just two of them. I usually feel like I have between 4 and 6 boyfriends.

    Beavis & Butthead!

  14. Rain on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 1:47 pm

Also Morgan and Chuck on “Chuck.” Which is just one similarity in several between “Chuck” and “Reaper.”

  15. freakgirl on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 1:49 pm

Rain, the geekboy and I discussed Morgan and Chuck last night. Geekboy says “yes,” I say “no.” Mostly because Chuck has an entire life and secrets that Morgan knows nothing about. They hang out a lot, but that’s it. Sock and Sam seem to be involved in each other’s lives down to every last decision.

But I am willing to be proved wrong…

I know their relationship was like the WHOLE POINT of the tv show and the play, but Oscar and Felix?

  17. Greater Czarina on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 2:05 pm

I know they are actual bros on Supernatural, but Sam and Dean bring the broyay like no others.

    I can’t believe nobody has said Kip/Buffy and Henry/Hildey!!

  19. Michael on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 2:27 pm

    You just shamed me, Chuck.

It doesn’t look like anyone has mentioned the two men from Nip/Tuck. I never watch it regularly, and haven’t seen it in over a year so forgive me for only remembering one of their names…Christian. The other one was…? I think they definitely qualify.

  21. freakgirl on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 3:18 pm

I don’t know these Buffy peoples.

Ew, those guys from Nip/Tuck are creepy. Most of what I’m talking about, though, is a humor-filled bromo relationship.

  22. Michael on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 3:45 pm

No, not that Buffy. He’s talking about the Bosom Buddies!

  23. genevieve on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 3:51 pm

If we’re talking 80s sitcoms, both Bosom Buddies and Perfect Strangers qualify.

  24. chuck on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 3:54 pm

    Shame on you, FG.

  25. Michael on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 4:42 pm

    Genevieve, yes! Larry and Balki.

  26. freakgirl on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 4:46 pm

Oh my christ, Chuck. You’re right. I saw “Buffy” and completely lost interest. I’m so sorry!

  27. chuck on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 9:54 pm

    DON’T YOU SKIM MY POSTS!!

  28. freakgirl on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 10:13 pm

I will never do it again.

I think Leslie Fiedler had a thing or two to say about this.

From literature, the famous ones are obviously Huck and Jim, Hawkeye and Chingachgook, Ishmael and Queequeg.

    From classic TV:
    Sonny & Rico (Miami Vice)
    Kirk & Spock (Star Trek)

I also like Han Solo and Chewbacca. Maybe the reason why Anakin went bad was because he needed to continue the “bromo” relationship. Jedi eventually leave their masters, and just as he is facing life as a Jedi he has to run into the arms of the Sith lord. And the sith are totally bromos, but in a dom/sub bastardization. Hmmm … I think there could be an academic conference paper there!
