Blockbuster Total Access

Blockbuster has a new DVD service to rival Netflix. In order to lure more people over, they’re adding a component - if you return an online rental to your local store, you’ll get a free rental on top of your online allowance. Check it out if that’s your thing. [Also, in the interest of full disclosure, I’m participating in a free trial of the service, and plan to review it here after we’ve used it for a while.] And if you just feel like getting some free movies, Blockbuster will take your Netflix flaps in exchange for free rentals.

I’ve been using it for almost two months after getting sucked into a free trial offer. I gotta tell you, I don’t know where I’m going to find time to watch all of the movies. But it is terribly convenient - we just took advantage of the in-store return this weekend. (Exchanged Imagine You & Me for Art School Confidential)

Yeah, we tend to bite off more than we can chew when it comes to renting movies. But we’ll see. Most shows are in repeats right now, so it would be nice to catch up on some stuff.

It will be especially handy when it comes time to get caught up with all the Oscar-nominated stuff prior to the Academy Awards.

I’ve been on BB.com for 2 years and I’ve been very pleased. They’re still working out the new website, but it’s way better than it was before. I went with this over Netflix because they offered 2 in store rental coupns per month. Now they have the switch out thing, which is great - and they still give you one coupon per month.

I wish I could stay awake to watch a movie. This sounds like a good offer, maybe you just gave me an idea for a Christmas gift!

My biggest issue with Blockbuster is their policy of not stocking titles that they thought were ‘controversial’ and editing of movies to fit their conservative mindset. No “Last Temptation of Christ”, for example. God forbid (bad pun) people see a human Jesus. I bet they stock “The Passion of the Christ” though. Yet again, my politics can be summed up by a simple bumper sticker: “If you don’t like abortions, don’t have one”. In other words, if you don’t want to see “Last Temptation”, don’t rent it but don’t prevent ME from seeing it if I want to, or (for haters of Blue Laws) if you don’t want to buy alcohol on a Sunday, don’t buy it but don’t enact a law that prevents me from doing so.

I have to say we LOVE Nexflix…. Le me know what you think about BB.
Robin on Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at 10:26 am
BB sucks. Their new service sucks. It takes at least 3 days to be credited for a movie you return in-store - it’d be faster to mail it. I’ve emailed them to see WTF was taking so long and after a huge runaround they finally admitted that the “long time to remove movies from queue that were returned in store” is a “known issue” and that they are working on it. Also, if the movie isn’t removed from queue within 3 days I should mark it returned manually. I don’t have the time or the patience to babysit these people- why should I have to? Their little scanner when they collect the movie in store should automatically release the next DVD in the queue - or at worse, next business day.
freakgirl on Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at 11:15 am
Robin, they actually have that issue listed in their FAQ. Not that it makes it any better, because it IS kind of bullshit. When a service goes live, all of it should work.
I guess they’re thinking people won’t care because they’ll have that extra in-store movie to watch?
GeekBoy on Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at 12:20 pm
Yeah, I’m thinking that as long as I have a new movie in hand immediately at the store, I doubt I’d get all that upset about a 3-day check-in delay. But then again, there’s nothing that I’m ever in that much hurry to see, and I doubt we’ll ever come even close to getting as many movies as we could in a month.
Meanwhile, I was impressed that we actually got our first batch of BB movies yesterday, after only making our picks on Saturday. Looks like they have a distribution center just down the road from us, the way NetFlix did.

I’ve been using BB for a couple of months now (I had netflix and BB earlier in the year, but I cancelled it because I wansn’t using it enough). I’m LOVING the new BB service. It is a little slow, but it isn’t enough to piss me off.

I’ve had BB Online for about 2 years. Everything was fine until Total Access. I used to get movies in a decent enough amount of time but things have changed. At first I thought that this would be a great way to get more movies and get them faster. Alas, I too have been disappointed by this new program. I have noticed the same problems others are mentioning. It is taking days and days for movies to clear my que.
Here’s the breakdown:
Before Total Access I used to mail my movies back, it would take about 4 days to turnaround movies so that was about 6 a week.
Now, I get 3 movies in the mail, take them back to the store, it takes 3 days (minimum) for them to mark them received and 3 more days to get the next movie. So again it’s about 6 movies a week.
What’s the benefit for me? None, I actually waste gas now by going to the store.
What’s the benefit for BB Online? They save a TON on shipping costs by bulk mailing movies back to the warehouses.
It has now been 4 days since I returned 3 movies to the store. Only 1 movie has been shipped out and that took 3 days for them to ship! Now why would this be when they were all returned at the same time? Also, it is still showing that I have all 3 movies out! How could I have even one of the movies if BB just sent me the next one? Wouldn’t I have to return 1 first?
Not only that but the 3 movies I returned over A WEEK BEFORE this last batch (on 2/4) are still showing on my que!! So I now have 6 movies showing on my que as not being returned. Now how could I still have the first 3 movies if BB sent me out the next 3? I would obviously have to return the first 3 to get the second 3. I mean come on!
The first 3 were on the que for 8 days AFTER I returned them to the store. The second 3, as I said, for 4 days. I had to use the “Report problem - I returned the movies†option online to remove them from my que. That was 2 days ago and they STILL haven’t sent my other 2 movies out! So now I have a que showing 1 shipped movie and there are 2 blank spots just sitting there. (update – since I started typing this they have now added that they are sending out a second movie)
I thought this Total Access would be a great way to get more movies but when it takes so many days for them to even register that they have been received, another day or two to ship and then another few days to receive them, what’s the point? I might as well just mail them back, it actually takes less time.
