Before & After
We finished the project in our sitting room! I’m not 100% happy with the color of the paint on the walls. I want it to be darker. However, we’re leaving it up because it makes the room look a lot cleaner. Further color decisions will be made later. The room, as a whole, looks brighter, I think. I’m mostly pleased with how everything came out. Before/After photo after the jump.
What do you think?
I also need some pretty storage ideas for the counter. We have a lot of grooming/everyday stuff we keep on that counter in plastic bins. Now it looks super crappy with the new paint job. Thoughts?

Much more liking!

There seems to be a pinkish ting on the after photos (late in the day light? overhead lighting?) so I’m not sure what the new wall colour is? Whatever the colour is, I think the bathroom looks a million times cleaner and fresher – amazing what a coat of paint will do, even erases 20 years away. Of course, the towels/clothes on the back dresser have disappeared, which also helps! ;) I know the colour you had on the walls (and everything else) was grey – what colour are the walls now?
September 30th, 2007 - 17:05
The new wall color…I can’t describe it. It was part of a color palette of grey, whitewash, and sandy clay. It’s probably close to peach without being peachy. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense, I’m sure.
I need to paint the rest of the bedroom but I’m wondering if I should go a little darker. I have so much paint left; can you bring used paint to the store and ask them to darken it for you? Probably not, eh?
September 30th, 2007 - 17:13
I think you can? Err, maybe not. Or you can be creative/experimental like my MIL and get a tiny pot of the same colour but darker and mix it in with your left over stuff? But you could end up hating it. BLAH.
I am jealous that your bathroom is not the size of a peanut.
We’re taking the week off to finish up painting the hallways/trim and going to Home Depot tomorrow to pick colours but take the rest of the day and take it easy, as it will likely be the only day of relaxation our Thanksgiving next Monday.

Good idea on getting a darker shade and mixing it in. Can’t hurt.
I’m kind of burned out on painting at the moment. We also painted the garage-side of the kitchen door with stuff that is supposed to make it into a dry-erase board, but I don’t think it’s going to work that well.
Take it easy!

I’m not sure what looks better – the carrot cake, or your bathroom! = )
September 30th, 2007 - 21:21
That vanity area looks GREAT! Like Outkast says, so fresh and so clean.
Can’t you keep all your stuff put away so the counter stays pristine? ;-)
September 30th, 2007 - 21:26
I knew you’d start hassling me about that. I don’t understand how you live. Just a toothbrush, neti pot and a jar of hair paste? And your monk’s robe. :D
I have an entire skin regimen, floss, contacts, hairspray, cotton balls, q-tips, bobby pins, powders, sunscreen, perfumes, pore-cleansing masks…oh, and all the geekboy’s stuff, too.

You can bring paint back to the store. They will add more pigment to darken it. I do it all the time. It’s easier for them to make it darker than lighter.

It looks much better, especially the cabinets. Walls look nice, too, but in pictures you can never really tell.
October 1st, 2007 - 05:05
So what are those vanity drawers for? Snacks?
No, I get it. It just looks so PERFECT now!
October 1st, 2007 - 07:23
Wow! It looks so much better! I’m impressed — I don’t think it would have occurred to me that you could paint that kind of cabinet.
Michael, I have a rule about my bathroom — the only thing out on the sink is hand soap (and when we have a dinner party, a flower or two in a double shot glass), and everything else (including Al’s neti, which always makes me think of Aladdin) has to fit in the medicine cabinet. We have no drawers or cabinets in bathroom, so all the big stuff goes in the hall closet. You’d probably be horrified by the rest of our apartment, but you’d like our bathroom…
October 1st, 2007 - 08:38
Michael, you shut up. ;) There is only one drawer and my makeup is in it. The ones under the sink are fake. The cabinet is full of cleaning stuff and crap that we rarely use. I probably could make room under there. Maye Susie could come over and do it for me.

Looks great! We have those exact same cabinets in our new laundry room and I’m stoked to learn that I can paint them. Did you have to do much stripping/sanding first?
October 1st, 2007 - 08:48
I didn’t strip them. I lightly sanded them and then primed the crap out of them.
I am still not confident the paint will not chip/peel off over time, but in the laundry room I wouldn’t worry about it.

Heh. I’ll de-clutter your bathroom if you do the rest of my apartment! Our bathroom austerity probably has a lot to do with the fact that I don’t own any makeup. My bathroom looks good, but I usually look like I just woke up. I’m thinking that as I approach 40 maybe I should consider hitting the cosmetics counter. Fortunately, Al makes up for my lack of products — he’s got all kinds of grooming crap. (It helps keep him pretty.)

Wow, shiny and new! Well done, Team Freak ‘n’ Geek!
October 1st, 2007 - 11:37
I love it!! I used to have those very same cabinets, in the townhouse I had before we moved here and had three hundred kids. Hated them! You sure made them look nice, though.
October 1st, 2007 - 12:53
It looks fabulous!
We had the same problem with 10381819 things on our vanity. We got one of those over-the-toilet racks, which don’t look half-bad with some of those low-slung plastic bins with all of our crap in them. However, our toilet is right next to our vanity, so it might be inconvenient if yours isn’t.
October 1st, 2007 - 14:21
Our toilet is actually in a different ROOM than the vanity, heh.
I’m thinking with some cabinet organization and a few purchases from here – http://tinyurl.com/2m6f6e – I can probably get the countertop looking prettier.
I want room for a bud vase, too!
October 1st, 2007 - 14:57
hey, it might be my monitor…but is the countertop darker in the after shots? if so – how’d you do that????
looks so much nicer. although i’m smitten with my current bathroom, i would *love* it if someone came in the middle of the night and redid it like yours – super clean looking.
oh and when they’re redoing it, they can clean it, empty my litterbox and *not* wake me. thank you.
looks great FG!!
October 1st, 2007 - 15:10
Ali, the counter is not darker. I think it might just be a combination of different lighting in the pics and the fact that there’s more contrast now between the counter and the things next to it. I replaced the gray sink with a white sink, and the walls got brighter.
October 1st, 2007 - 15:22
ahhhh…my boyfriend got the bright idea to paint his kitchen countertops black.
oh did i mention he’s retarded? hahaha it was SUCH a bad idea (for the record, he did it when we were on a “break”!) and i wondered if you guys knew of something like that…
well all in all – the work you put into it looks really good!!!
October 1st, 2007 - 15:26
Wow. I can’t even imagine how you’d paint a countertop like that and not have it be chipping all the time.
