Because I am Elderly and No Longer Understand the Ways of the Internet

Please explain these to me – how they work and why I should find them important/useful:

  1. Tumblr
  2. Foursquare

Thank you.

  1. Tumblr is just like blogspot or wordpress.com or whatever… only with a lot of scene kids you have to ignore. idk. I kind of love the quick and messy of Tumblr, but you know that already :D
Tumblr – If’s for lazy people

foursquare is teh stupids. I tried, but I don’t get why that’s interesting. OH, I AM MAYOR OF MY HOUSE! It’s Twitter but just the location information. Pass.

  2. Wow – I never even heard of Tumblr. I guess that shows how old and out of it I am. Foursquare seems kind of dumb to me. Then again Facebook seemed dumb until I started using it.

  3. Big fan of Tumblr. It’s an easy and customizable microblogging platform. I use it for two blogs (one at creativevictuals.tumblr.com); Newsweek also has a great Tumblr (newsweek.tumblr.com).

I tried FourSquare for about a week and then deleted my account. (I need to know how this stuff works for my job.) I think a lot of businesses will start using it to award special offers for number of check-ins (free drinks, apparel, etc.) and use location services to lure patrons from one location to another. For example, imagine getting a cell message that says, “Hey, come next door to Sal’s and get a drink on the house!”

If I’ve got a warm seat at the bar, I’m not likely to abandon it for a free cocktail down the street. And I hate when people share their updates via Twitter. But people seem to dig it.

  4. I don’t understand tumblr.

The only thing appealing about Foursquare, to me, is the “game” aspect of it. How you unlock badges and win virtual prizes for going out. If it were just a tool to tell people where you are it would be kind of lame. But the way it is now, you can turn your life into a little virtual game.

Which, yes, is also lame, but sometimes I WANT to be rewarded in some way for leaving me apartment.

  5. Foursquare is basically just a way to annoy people on Twitter. You could also call it a stalker’s wet dream.

    Tumblr I don’t quite get.

  6. I use Foursquare just for the game aspect. I don’t let it post to my Twitter or FB because I have no desire to annoy everyone i know. However last week I became “mayor” of my supermarket and that’s probably not a good sign =)

Tumblr I wasn’t really aware was a “thing”. It’s just a blogging format like blogspot and wordpress isn’t it? I hear it’s really easy to maintain but that’s about it. Or am i missing something.

  7. I’ve never used blogspot or wordpress, so I can’t really compare, but I like Tumblr for ease of posting photos (and the fact that my job’s net nanny doesn’t block them, usually). I’m on it with a bunch of Star Trek fans, watching Tumblrs like “Fuck Yeah Dr. McCoy!” because I’m a giant nerd. I’m mostly using it as a constantly rotating eyecandy parade.

Never heard of foursquare, but, judging from the comments, I’m avoiding it.

  8. Count me among those that don’t get Tumblr. How is it easier than blogger/blogspot/etc?

I don’t like 4sq (mostly because I don’t get out much…er…at all) but really don’t get Farmville and why it would be a trending topic on Twitter…it’s that popular?

  9. Brigita – it literally does everything for you. Want to embed an MP3? Just tell it which one, and it’ll pretty it up for you. You don’t even need to know how to give credit for other blog posts – you just hit that reblog button, and it does it for you. It’s also nice if you just want to funnel your other feeds into one place. Again, it makes it all purdy and such.

I mean, you don’t have to use it like grandma, but it helps, lol

I just love the random gems it yields, with the Fuck Yeah! series, and bea arthur/mountains/pizza.
